Fixing a Crappy Day

I had a really horrible day today that was a mix of things not going well for current deals and missing out on a new deal because I didn't buy my flooring in our town from the only overpriced dealer.

I did something that would make my day a little brighter. I bought and delivered flowers to my best friend. She's not pregnant anymore and has had a terrible week obviously. She's been in the hospital three times in the last week. She is super strong and I know she will make it through but I want her to know that I've got her back.

What do you do when you have a horrible day? Do you focus on doing something nice for somebody else? Take extra time to play with your kid? Exercise?

Budgeting for Irregular Expenses

I have never budgeted for irregular expenses but the unusual thing is that I pay for all expenses annually or biannually if I can. In the past, I would just pay for them out of our regular cash flow or take the money out of savings is needed.

We've had a ton of these lately and I took the time and effort to make a list of all our irregular expenses.

Auto insurance
Property taxes
Life insurance
Motorcycle insurance
Motorcycle and automobile tabs
Garbage pick-up (quarterly)
Home insurance

The total is a whopping $4155 or almost $350 per month. I still have my old ING, now Capital One account, that I haven't used since we built our house. I'm going to start an automatic transfer for $175 bimonthly to account for these items. I've thought about increasing it to $200 biweekly to cover Christmas as well but I'm not sure about that.

What is your system?

2/20 Spending Update

Quick post today because I'm tired.

Today's spending:
$25.63 Walmart household items
$24.55 grocery store

Not too bad considering. Tomorrow should be a no spend day.

2/19 Spending Update

Yesterday was a no spend day because we had yet another blizzard. It was Presidents day so both Y and I had the day off. We just chilled at home and watched movies.

Today's spending is as follows:
Gas $44
Beer $18.52
wine at a fundraiser $6 (the ticket was free from my work)

I need to go to the grocery store this week to check to see if they have any discounted meat. Last week they had a ton of marinated pork tenderloins that were expiring on 2/25 for $5.99 per pound. If they still have any this week, they should be marked down to $1.99 per pound. We love these so I will buy plenty if they have them.

It doesn't bother me in the least to buy expired meat because I just freeze it. Do you think its odd to want to buy cheap, expired meat?

2/17 Spending Update

We had a very good Sunday today. We did visit my father-in-law and he's doing well. He said some funny things which had to be because of the pain meds.

Today's spending is as follows:
Fleet farm $141 which was for motor oil, hydraulic fluid, water softener salt (4 bags of salt were for my in-laws and they offered to pay for them but we declined because they always cover dinner.)
Kohls $5.83 summer outfit for Lil punk--I had a coupon for $10 off
DSW $48.53 badly needed new work shoes for me
Redbox $3.61

I've noticed that we tend to have way more expenses in the household category and I attribute it to where we live.

On a different note, my best friend told me today that she's pregnant. I'm so happy for her and a little sad. I so would like to have another baby. We are more than ready but its just not happening. Every month when I find out that I'm not, I have such a feeling of despair. What's meant to be will be, right?

2/16 Spending Update

Yesterday was a no spend day! We stayed at home and chilled out.

We will be spending money today because we have planned a visit to my father-in-law. He had knee surgery on Friday. The surgery went well but afterwards he started to have chest pain so he was taken via ambulance to the hospital. I guess he's doing okay now. Y doesn't seem as worried about the situation as I am.

We also need motor oil and hydraulic fluid. Very fun stuff:)

What do you have planned for your Sunday?

Drastic Changes Needed!!

Today was our payday and instead of being overjoyed at all the money that flowed right to our savings account or paying off our credit card, I was greatly disappointed that it was already pissed away. Again this month, it seems like we have had a freakin ton of expenses, both planned and unplanned. Notice anything? This seems to be a regular occurrence of having a ton of things just creep up.

Y and I had a talk about how we need to cut back all expenses. No, we don't follow a budget and rarely have in the past. We just cut expenses when we need to do so and we're pretty good at it. We pay ourselves first or pay the evil credit card first so we're usually ok. We need to do better. I might even start posting how much we spend to keep us accountable. I usually don't do this because I'm lazy and don't want to hear negative feedback. This might need to change.

Ok, as I'm writing this, I decided that I will post my daily expenses. I might work up to weekly expense reports.

For today:
lunch $12.18
admission to wrestling match $6
hotdogs at wrestling match $3
groceries $80.50
repair for hydraulics for the tractor $165

Expensive day largely due to the tractor repair but we've had a lot of snow and we need to be self sufficient.

I hate debt and it needs to go. UGH!!

Happy Valentines Day!!

This morning Y surprised me with chocolates and a card that was so sweet and loving it made me cry. I love that man so much and am so grateful to have him in my life.

Tonight I will just make dinner for all of us at home. I worked in restaurants for too many years to ever think it would be fun to go out to eat on Valentines day. I prefer a low key dinner at home.

What are your plans?

We are in a severe blizzard today and tomorrow. Thankfully we knew it was coming. As I am at home today with my family, I'm so thankful that we are nice and warm with plenty of food to eat. We're so blessed:)

I Am a Gardening GEEK!!!

If there's one thing that has changed since I moved to the country, it would be that I absolutely love planting veggies and fruits.  So much so that I'm pouring over my seed magazines today on this wintery February day so I can place my order for seeds and plants.  If I place it before February 13th, I get 50% off.  However, I will still likely spend around $200 in part to planting many perennial fruit plants.  I will be ordering the following:

Honeyberries--these are like large blueberries but they grow in alkaline soil which we have here
Black raspberries--I already have regular raspberries planted and I think that these will cross polinate beautifully
Goji Berries--these are a cross between strawberries, raspberries, and cranberries that are supposed to be very good for you
Bush cherries--like regular cherries but smaller and tarter
Purple asparagus--I love asparagus and its only one of two vegetable perennials plants (the other is rhubarb).  I will also be getting regular asparagus from an acquaintance that we gave a brand new tub that didn't fit into our house.
Red Zepplin onions--These are huge onions that are supposed to keep for up to 8 months.  We eat a lot of onions and they are quite expensive in the store.  We ran out of our onions in December of this year but if we could grow enough to see us through the winter, that would be great.

A few other things we are buying:

Radishes--a good mix.  I love radishes.
hot pepper plants
tomato plants
lettuce mix
Beans--soybeans, pole beans (purple and green), and shell beans

I'm sure there are other things that I'm buying that I haven't listed here.  I just love gardening and really look forward to it.  I'm a little bored with finances lately so this blog may turn to the gardening and personal side for the next little bit.

Do you garden?  Or do you shop at a farmer's market?  Do you see anything that I'm missing?

Work Trip

I just got back from a work trip that included a bit of shopping. All of my expenses were paid and I will be reimbursed for gas.

I went a few hours early and got in some quality shopping. Express, H & M, The Children's Place, Gap Body, Gordman's. So much fun and very good deals. I.haven't added up exactly what I spent but I think it was around a hundred cash and $40 gift card. It's been about a year since I have done any shopping for myself.

Trepidation About Taxes

I have my tax appointment tomorrow but I couldn't wait so I put our information into Turbo Tax. We were really hoping for a refund but according to Turbo Tax, we will owe about $500 for federal and $150 for state. I'm really hoping that those numbers are wrong and it will pay to have our accountant do our taxes.

I won't change our withholdings because we would be getting a refund of about a thousand bucks but we got a grant. Let me explain. We had to put in a new septic system last summer when we built our house. We worked with USDA for a grant to upgrade to a mound system. They paid about $6000 for which we received a 1099. I was pretty bummed until Y pointed out that it's way better to owe $500 than $6000. We will find out tomorrow.

Bought Half a Beef

We bought half a beef today from my best friend's parents. We got 325 pounds of beef for $816.40. It comes out to $2.51 per pound. We actually got a good deal because they are like second parents to me.
I prefer to get our meat from local farms because of all the hormones in the meat in the store. I don't buy organic meat in the store because its so flipping expensive.
Do you buy organic meat in the store or from a local farm?
