My First Luxury

In high school and for one year after, I worked at a bank for minimum wage. Then I got a job doing road construction. I usually worked around 85 hours per week and made around $12 per hour. I felt rich.

I also hired my first luxury. I hired my oil changed instead of doing it myself. It was around $21 to have it done. I could usually do it myself for around $11 by buying oil by the case. I had blocks that I ran my car up on and changed it.

It was really nice to hire it done. So easy!

What was your first luxury that you purchased or hired out?

  1. I really can't remember the first. But one luxury that sticks out in my memory was when I had a cleaning service come in and clean our condo when I was around 8 months pregnant with Baby Ripples. I was so excited and wanted to actually start using the service on a regular basis. When I got home from work, I was so not impressed. It took 2 people twice as long as what I usually take to clean the house, cost around $80 and wasn't any cleaner than what I would have done in half the time and for free.

Lesson Learned. But that was one of the things I always said that as soon as we could afford it we would hire someone to come in and clean so it was exciting to realize we made it to that point financially even if we chose not to do it.

    1. I have never paid to have my house cleaned but I want to. This is the most common argument in our house.

  2. well, I didn't pay for it, but my employer at the time bought me a gift card for a pedicure as my holiday bonus. I was 18, and it was my first time ever - loved it! I'm terrible at painting my nails, so as soon as I could afford it, I made it a monthly splurge.

    1. Even though I rarely get them, I love pedicures. So relaxing.

  3. Hmm... I am really not sure at all. I'd fancy to say it has to be food related. Maybe back when we were in college and I was working as a small-website editor and they paid me through Paypal. Me and my sister would eat at school instead of the alternative not eating anything but vending machine snacks from 8am to 3pm. We still only ate at the cafeteria twice a week when our schedules matched. Packing lunch? Sure, we could've. But who wanted to cart around food plus the 50lb of college books and a laptop.

    1. Packing lunch in college just isn't very practical. Lunch with your sis sounds nice.

  4. The first time I felt "rich" was when I got a waitressing job at a high class place. I was pulling in good money because of the place and because "pardon this" but I was so good at my job. ;-)
After I used that spare money(since we only lived on Hubs income)to pay off his student loans I actually took up a hobby-I allowed myself to spend some money to buy and paint ceramics.

Of course, with my mindset, that turned into a business venture(as have most of my subsequent hobbies have).....not a very successful venture, but still.

Hubs would say the day we also stopped doing our own oil changes on the cars and paid someone else to have them done was one of our first luxuries.
Come to think of it, we really don't have many luxuries like that....except maybe eating out or take-out, which we sort of don't do much of that anymore.

  5. Sometimes I cannot believe I am 29 and have never made more than 10.75 an hour and $12k a year. Just shameful and depressing.

    1. You definitely have the right attitude with your new job so that will likely turn around soon.

    2. Will it, though? Being in a better mood at a crap wage job doesn't equal a better job.

I know, you're just saying that. But hopefully you now understand that I am not, and never will be, lazy at heart.

  6. We hired a lawn service about 4 years ago. They come once a week - it feels totally decadent.

    1. Our lawn takes a good 6+ hours to now so we would very much like that.

  7. I think my first luxury was also car related and it was a car wash. I also paid for my first service as well I think.
